This procedure applies to installing a printer connected to a CUPS printer server (e.g. damasio at ISLab) in a Windows XP machine. Here it goes:
- Go to the Printers and faxes control panel, and then click Add printer
- At the wizard, select Local printer and disable the automatical detection checkbox
- Then select Create a new port with type Standard TCP/IP Port
- Enter the server IP (rather than the hostname!), e.g. 10.0.2.9 for damasio.
- At the Device type, select Custom and click Settings
- Set the Protocol to LPR, and enter the queue name (you must know this beforehand, e.g. Eva for Eva printer at ISLab)
- Select the appropriate manufacturer and model from the list (e.g. HP LaserJet 1220 PS for Eva)
- And finally set the printer name to something meaningful
(In fact, this procedure applies to all printers/servers using the LPD protocol)
